Claudio Ranieri accepted the "dream" Leicester City job as he was so keen to return to the Premier League.
The former Chelsea manager was yesterday named as Nigel Pearson's successor at the King Power Stadium.
The Thai-owned Foxes have been searching for a high-profile replacement with Martin O’Neill and Guus Hiddink considered.
But Hiddink snubbed them and a move for Republic of Ireland boss O’Neill was thwarted.
Ranieri, 63, who has not worked in English football since 2004, has lots of experience from bossing the likes of Juventus, Inter Milan, Roma and Monaco.
Leicester wanted a respected well-known coach as they bid to repair their reputationafter the exit of Pearson.
Despite keeping Leicester up, Pearson was fired soon after his son James was sacked along with two other City players, following a racist sex tape filmed on the post-season tour of Thailand.
Italian Ranieri, out of work since being axed by Greece last November, said: “Since I left Chelsea I have dreamt of another chance to work in the best league in the world again.
“Now I've only one way for returning their trust: squeeze all my energies to getting the best results for the team.”
Ranieri will oversee his first training session today at the club's pre-season base in Austria, assisted by Craig Shakespeare, Steve Walsh and the existing City backroom team.
